requested site changes

Skip,

I'm wondering if any of the changes are possible:

  • larger edit box when posting comments
  • a button to post without having to preview first
  • moving the buttons to preview and post up higher on the page so that I don't have to grab the scrollbar to go to the bottom of the page to click a button
  • user option to not display the formatting guidelines, thereby giving more space for the text box

Re: requested site changes

I'm wondering if any of the changes are possible:

  • larger edit box when posting comments
  • I'll see if that is possible. Since this is done via template it might make unwanted changes elsewhere. How wide would you want it to be? What screen width are you at? I wonder if it might affect the rich-text editor?

  • a button to post without having to preview first
  • This is a configuration option. I have changed it to where you should be able to post without previewing.  We'll see how that works for a while.

  • moving the buttons to preview and post up higher on the page so that I don't have to grab the scrollbar to go to the bottom of the page to click a button
  • What I do is hit ctl-pgdn and I'm there. I'm not sure where I'd want to move them. Again this is in the template.

  • user option to not display the formatting guidelines, thereby giving more space for the text box
  • I think this is in the template. The problem would be the non-expert users would be left in the lurch. There is the possibility for multiple templates though. I'll see what I can find when I get some time.

I think what you are really saying is you are comfortable with the way it is and need an expert mode. Have you gone and looked at the various themes at the site for the system?

Made it twice as high for creating content. It should be about 40 em instead of 20 em. Changed comment areas to 95% width and 30 ems high. (an em is a unit of measure used in css styles) Let me know what you think of them. Too big? Too little?

  • Reconfigured so you don't have to post without preview but preview is still available.

The others I'm not going to change for now. I don't want to make really major mods as there is a major upgrade for the software to be available pretty soon. So I'll wait till then to see what needs changing at that time.

    Skip and Scott,

Since postings on all SR forums have slowed down, I just want to say thanks to Scott for the suggestions and thanks to Skip for all he has done to unify the different user groups.

PS. I suspect speechcomputing.com activity will pick up after our US Labor Day.

Thanks to ScottW for bringing it up and to you for implementing it so quickly. I didn't realize how annoying that little box was until Scott mentioned it. Of course, if we ever go back to a smaller box, it'll be absolutely unbearable Smiling

It took almost a day to figure out where it goes. In the meantime I found a really cool web developer tool that's an extension to Firefox. Without that it would be a bit harder. It's called (oddly enough) Webdeveloper. Tells a LOT about a site's design.

The only thing I'm having to do now is to write a log of all the changes I'm making so when the new version comes out I'll be able to remember all I made changes for on here.

Otherwise you might get that small box again. Laughing out loud
