Has anyone successfully used VPN while using DNS to maneuver programs?
Submitted by ej on Tue, 08/12/2008 - 16:38.
I have Cisco systems VPN services to theoretically telework from home. Unfortunately, when it is launched and I can access my computer at work, my dragon NaturallySpeaking becomes confused and deactivated. I have looked previously with a tech in my office to place the user files on a different directory, etc., to no avail. The last time I spoke to Dragon NaturallySpeaking's nuance services in early 2007, they said that they had not figured out how to address the problem yet.
Have any of you found a workaround? This would be immensely helpful.
thank you,
Elena

Use DNS with VPN
I used DNS 9.5 Pro very successfully with VPN. I made sure that DNS was either in Mic off mode or that DNS was not running, on my computer that I was using a VPN to log into.

I am not sure that I understand. My goal is to use a microphone in order to operate the computer. I rely upon voice-activated software to use the computer and run at all times. Are the two programs mutually exclusive? Can I not apply to software to the VPN program/documents that I'm accessing?
Up front I'll tell you that
Up front I'll tell you that I'm a bit uninformed on VPN technologies.
Are the programs you need to access on a remote computer or is it presented as a graphical desktop or textual command line to you?
Have you tried any type of macro (windows or DNS) to help run programs?
Color me curious.
I've never had a problem
I've never had a problem using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and a Cisco VPN to connect to work. I do it about once every couple of months, so it's not like I've done thorough testing, but I do use it.
I use Dragon
I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking and a Cisco VPN to connect to work every day - no problems.
A VPN after all only provides access to network resources such as file shares or to the exchange server - it should have no effect on speech recognition at all.
The only area where a VPN *may* affect SR, is solely the fact that it uses more system resources, (RAM, processor), than not being connected to a VPN; but that should be negligible unless your PC is already on the edge resource wise...
Thanks everyone! It is resolved.
Thank you everyone -- I gave it another stab with my new employer and it looks like everything is fine now. With my previous employer, perhaps it was a more secure VPN system because it absolutely would not work. I have a new one downloaded and it works like a breeze. Thank you for the encouragement and correct information.
