How do you really train MS Speech recognition under Vista so you can use it efficiently?
Submitted by liketotalk on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 01:11.
I am using Vista Ultimate edition w 4 GB memory on motherboard. Much interested in utilizing this application in my day to day use. However once I completed the training phase which was accomplished without any hick ups I have encountered constant problems in using the app efficiently. Even choosing numbers function is a constant challenge as I may have to repeat myself multiple times.
In other words I end up spending a lot of time doing corrections which I wouldn't mind doing if it would be for a short period of time only.
Your feedback is much appreciated.

Vista Speech Recognition
It has been my experience that the microphone is really hot in Vista, and if you are not careful you will start overdriving everything, and it appears that the system is very unresponsive. use the advanced speech control panel to really tamp the sound down. Then do the voice training a couple of times, and then practice dictating very softly. It worked for me. Then I would also suggest you stop by the MS-Speech group to listen in to that user group. They are now offering a macro creation tool that will really help your use of the program.

Frank, thanks for your
Frank, thanks for your advice. It makes a lot of sense. I'll put it into action and post my experience with changes you suggested.

Although Frank's idea about the microphone being hot may be true for him, our experience with many different users and systems shows that it is just a matter of the basics. First of all, you need to understand that speech recognition software works best when you enunciate every word as clearly as possible and speak in phrases. CLICK HERE to go to our links/articles page and listen to the three sound files on How to Sound and How Not Sound.
Have you been running the audio setup (Peter dictates to his computer...) before beginning a dictation session? This helps not only put you into dictation mode, but sets up the microphone for the quality of your voice and takes into account some what the background noise level. Although you have a fast computer, your microphone and sound card may not be up to par. The first thing to do is to make a recording in sound recorder. The playback should be free of any electronic noise or background noise. If it is not free of noise, it will affect the quality/accuracy of your dictation. For Windows Vista CLICK HERE for directions to make the recording.
A good microphone will not only reproduce your voice accurately, but will block out background noise which affects accuracy.
We have developed a useful WSR (Windows™ Speech Recognition) Toolkit. This toolkit has many of the features other mature speech recognition software has. The WSRToolkit easily allows you create re-usable text macros and step by step command macros. In addition you can add words and or phrases to your personal vocabulary and add your documents so the software can analyze your personal writing style. Finally, if you use a quality digital recorder you can transcribe .wav files to text. CLICK HERE to download a trial good until 8/31/2008. After that it is planned to be priced at an outrageous cost of $15.99 or less. Also, anyone who purchases a microphone valued over $100.00 will be entitled to a free licensed copy.
