Dragon NaturallySpeaking Recorder Cord
Submitted by jca1 on Fri, 08/01/2008 - 13:51.
O.K., this is a "I can't find the dipstick" type question: Transferring over to new computer. The computer plug for my NaturallyMobile R1 recorder is a 9 pin type w/ 2 thumb screws (what's the name for this plug anyway?). No similar receptacle on my Dell Vostro 200. Do I need an adapter or can I use a 2-ended usb line? If adapter - what do I ask for? Thanks!

I think you are looking at a Serial connection cable with a non-standard USB connection at the other end that fits the recorder. On no account attempt to connect the recorder via a "2-ended" USB cable.
You should be able to find a USB to Serial adapter that allows you to use your NaturallyMobile cable. The adapters cost between £15 and £35 in the UK which is considerably more than the recorder is now worth. See if your local museum is interested in historic artefacts and then go out and buy a modern digital recorder as it's a miracle that the recorder is still functioning!

Thanks, Graham. You're
Thanks, Graham. You're right - it was not exactly cutting edge when I got it, but it has been reliable and fits my limited requirements - however, the hand crank is a nuisance and the wood is splintering...

That is a DB-9 connector you describe.
Google DB-9 serial to usb converter.
Onesuch is found at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
It's priced at $8.99+$6.99 shipping

As an FYI: Install the driver before connecting the cable. This adapter uses the Prolific PL-2303 (H, HX, X) USB to Serial Bridge Controller chip.

I found a whole page of these converters at:

They seem a tad pricey to me... but that's me.
I got one for a printer
I got one for a printer some years ago that looks like the one that cost about $16. I think I paid about $4 for it. I never tried it with the SpeechMike, but it would be interesting, and maybe some time I will try it out. It has been sitting on my window ledge for about two years waiting to find it a new use
