DNS9.5 Unable to "wake up" microphone

Hello,

I am a new user to DNS. I am running XP with 1GB RAM and P4 processor.

I installed DNS about one week ago. Everything had been operating fine and then in the middle of a MS Word Document it did not pick up vocals anymore. I looked through the HELP information and it said that the microphone was sleeping. I have tried everything that it said to "wake it up" and nothing worked so this evening I uninstalled DNS and reinstalled and it still came up as a sleeping microphone. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jaci

When you say the microphone is "Sleeping," do you mean the microphone symbol (in the Dragon Bar or Task Bar) is yellow and laying at an angle? If so, are you able to "Wake Up" the microphone by clicking the microphone symbol so it turns green?

First thing to do is run the Audio Setup Wizard. Do this by clicking the Tools menu, Accuracy Center, and Check your audio settings. This will set the microphone levels correctly. If you do not pass this test, you may have a problem with your microphone.

It shows a small grey box

It shows a small grey box beside the green microphone. The task bar shows a small yellow area that was green when I spoke. I say wake up as the instructions state and nothing happens. I tried running the audio setup wizard again but it states that the volume to the microphone is too low to hear. The headset that I am using came with the DNS set and has only been used for one week so I would hate to think that something was already wrong with the microphone.

The 1st thing you need to be aware of is that the Andrea
Electronics NC-91 microphone that's included with a box of NaturallySpeaking
Professional should only be considered as a starter microphone at best in the
microphone that's included with DNS Preferred is notably lower quality. If you
are at all serious about speech recognition or speech recognition plays an
important part in your workflow, you shouldn't be using a substandard soundcard
and/or microphone.

Okay, now we can move on to test your microphone. Although you say you'd hate to think it isn't working, most people who have been using speech recognition a longtime think of the microphone supplied with the software as a starter microphone as Nuance buys them in bulk for four dollars apiece. That is why there are so many aftermarket microphones available specifically for speech recognition. That is why you need to test the microphone independent of Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Here are directions for using Windows sound recorder to make a short recording. A short for a five second recording should be free of any electronic noise and should be crisp and clear. If it is not, you are likely to need a new microphone. For Windows XP CLICK HERE for easy to follow directions. For Windows Vista CLICK HERE. Make sure to follow the directions as it will help confirm you are using the correct audio input device (soundcard).

Sometimes doesn't work for

Sometimes doesn't work for me either. At one point, years ago, out of the blue, "wake up" stopped working altogether with no changes, but "listen to me" kept working, so that's what I use now. Sometimes it just won't wake up in the morning at all, no matter what, although usually that turns out to be some kind of interference providing noise on my microphone. But not always -- it's a somewhat buggy process. Very frustrating, because I am hands-free, and if the microphone won't wake up, there's not much you can do.

“listen to me" works better because it is a longer phrase

This is a different situation. When NaturallySpeaking is in the “Asleep state” it is listening for a command to turn the microphone back on but NaturallySpeaking simply isn't as good at recognition when it is in the Asleep state. The reason why the “listen to me” command works better then the “wake up” command is because “listen to me” is twice as long.
